Anxiety Treatment Center in Northern CA

Everyone experiences some anxiety. It’s a natural reaction to being in a stressful, embarrassing or dangerous situation. In some cases, it may even be a helpful response, allowing people to stay on their toes and notice details they might otherwise miss. But for nearly 20% of Americans, anxiety goes well beyond an occasional feeling.

For those who deal with an anxiety disorder, even everyday actions like leaving the house, socializing with friends or driving to work can send their nervous system into overdrive. And when it starts affecting their ability to live their lives, it may be time to consider care for anxiety.

Diamond House is Northern California’s location for anxiety treatment. Our anxiety disorder treatment center provides our clients with a soothing reprieve from the anxieties in their life so they can focus on healing and developing the skills they need to thrive.

Symptoms of Anxiety

symptoms of anxietyTwenty percent of Americans translates to millions of people dealing with anxiety disorders. Some of the most common anxiety diagnoses are:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): Nearly seven million Americans experience generalized anxiety disorder, or a persistent and all-encompassing sense of fear, worry or dread. While other anxiety disorders like social anxiety and phobias are associated with a specific cause, GAD may not have a discernable cause. Still, people dealing with it are prone to restlessness, fatigue, insomnia, irritability and unexplained pain.
  • Panic disorder: Six million Americans deal with panic disorder, a condition distinguished through panic attacks. Panic attacks often bring intense feelings of doom and worry, and people going through them may have trouble breathing and experience chest pains, shaking, tingling sensations and a racing heart. The duration and severity of panic attacks vary by person and situation, but most people with panic disorder also face additional anxiety about when their next attack may occur.
  • Social anxiety: Social anxiety is the most common anxiety condition in the United States, affecting more than 15 million adults. It’s characterized by a fear of judgment from others and being in social situations. People with social anxiety may avoid crowds, speak infrequently or quietly and have trouble making eye contact. They may deal with blushing, trembling, sweating and stomachaches when faced with social situations.
  • Phobias: Phobias describe anxieties related to a specific thing or situation, such as public speaking or spiders. Individuals may appear completely fine until faced with the object they fear, in which case they may react strongly and avoid interacting with it at all costs.
  • Separation anxiety disorder (SAD): Primarily affecting children and pets, separation anxiety disorder causes intense fear and worry about being separated from a parent, family member or even places where one feels comfortable. It can manifest as extreme difficulty in leaving home or loved ones and physical illness when one is out of their normal comfort zone.

Anxiety disorders can present themselves at any point in life, but symptoms often start in childhood or adolescence. These symptoms can be primarily physical or mental or a combination of both. As you can see, symptoms may present differently based on the specific disorder, but these symptoms are common in most forms:

  • Insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension
  • Chest tightness or heart palpitations
  • Panic attacks
  • Agitation
  • Irritability
  • Excessive worrying
  • Disruptive or irrational thoughts and fears
  • Feeling “on edge”

how to recognize anxiety

How to Recognize Anxiety

While some of these symptoms are obvious to observers, someone dealing with anxiety may try to hide or downplay their symptoms instead of “burdening” someone by asking for help. Even though you want to help them, they may not feel like they deserve your support due to their overthinking. Still, you may be able to help by:

  • Paying attention to their symptoms: Some anxiety is a natural part of life, which is why most anxiety disorders cannot be diagnosed until the person has dealt with the symptoms for a month or more. If you’re concerned about someone close to you, note when their symptoms flare up, and if these continue for four weeks, it may be time to intervene.
  • Talking to them: Ultimately, you will only know if someone is struggling or learn how to help them if you talk to them. Anxiety is a manageable and treatable condition, but only when the person can access the resources and support they need to learn and grow. Take the time to ask them about their experiences and listen to what they’ve been going through. Then, when appropriate, help them consider their treatment options.

Common Anxiety Treatment Programs

Since anxiety can flare up for any number of reasons, there are just as many treatment options. Diamond House offers many of these proven therapies, including:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): During CBT, clients are encouraged to examine their thought patterns and develop new, healthy responses. It also focuses on finding effective coping strategies to turn to when your anxiety begins to overwhelm you.
  • Eye movement and desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapy: EMDR is a type of trauma therapy that uses rhythmic eye movements to help clients process traumatic events and work through emotionally charged memories.
  • Trauma therapy: One of the most common symptoms of trauma is anxiety, and to remedy the anxiety, one has to work through the underlying trauma. Trauma therapies offer different modalities for clients to process their trauma in a safe space and consider healthy coping mechanisms to help them through flashbacks and the surrounding anxiety these memories can bring.
  • Art therapy: Everyone expresses themselves differently, and for some people, talk therapy is not the most effective form of communication. We offer art therapy to let our clients experiment with expression and show themselves through new modalities.
  • Group therapy: Group therapy gives you the chance to connect with other clients in the mental health program and hear about their experiences. We’ve found this therapy often allows our clients to gain a new perspective of their situation and feel supported by the community they’re a part of.
  • Psychiatric care: With severe anxiety, therapy may work best when combined with prescription medication. Our on-site Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will meet with you and your treatment team regularly to prescribe medication and monitor its effects.

Why Consider Treatment for You or Your Loved One?

When anxiety starts taking over someone’s life, it can lead to so much more than nervousness and isolation. When they’re unaware of available treatment options, they may find ways to self-medicate, such as using alcohol or drugs. However, this can ultimately worsen symptoms. Over time, people may feel like their anxiety is endless and inescapable, leading to a breakdown of relationships, self-harm or even suicidal thoughts and actions.

That’s why getting treatment as soon as possible is crucial for healing from and learning to live with anxiety. If you’re considering treatment options for yourself or someone you love, start by:

  • Educating yourself: There are many forms of anxiety, and everyone experiences them differently. Get the facts about anxiety and its treatment possibilities so you can better identify these signs in yourself and the people around you.
  • Reaching out for help: No one needs to go through mental health struggles alone. Whether you talk to someone you trust or an experienced professional, making someone else aware of your situation can ease the burden and make every step after a bit easier.
