OCD Treatment in Northern California

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that affects about 1.2% of the United States population at any given time. That’s 2.5 million people dealing with intrusive thoughts and uncontrollable actions every single day. While this condition is sometimes minor, many people dealing with chronic OCD will notice it negatively affecting their lives at some point. When that happens, it may be time to visit a professional care center for treatment.

Diamond House in Northern California has treatment programs for people looking for OCD treatment. We know your life is busy and complicated, and we’ll work around your schedule so you can get the care you need without sacrificing your responsibilities.

What Is OCD?

OCD is characterized by two things — obsessions, which refer to repetitive and unavoidable thought patterns, and compulsions, which are actions the person feels compelled to complete, often over and over again. These symptoms can manifest as:

  • Irrational fears of contamination, losing control or uncertainty
  • Intrusive thoughts, especially about taboo subjects like sex, violence and harming others
  • Completing repetitive thoughts or actions a certain number of times
  • Concerns over losing something or forgetting to do something important
  • Concerns about having a serious illness or medical issue

How to Deal With OCD, Anxiety and Obsessive Thoughts

At Diamond House, we provide our clients with a range of treatments for OCD, anxiety, depression and many other mental illnesses. We believe the key to managing your mental health is using many therapeutic modalities to target your symptoms and help you overcome or manage them. During your time with us, you may participate in:

  • Individual therapy: For many of our clients, one-on-one therapy is the most vital part of their treatment. Individual therapy allows you to discuss your OCD in detail and help you and your therapist understand its triggers and develop new ways to cope with it. Our individual therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and various trauma-related therapies, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).
  • Group therapy: Group therapies provide new perspectives for many of our clients. Talking to other participants with similar struggles can help you feel more supported and less alone in what you’re dealing with. Many of these sessions focus on learning new skills to deal with the challenges of everyday life that often contribute to cycles of mental illness.
  • Art therapy: Art therapy offers a different way for clients to express themselves. This modality has proven to be more effective than talk therapy in some cases and may offer therapists new insights into what you’re going through.
  • Psychiatric treatment: Diamond House also has Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners on staff. We’ve found that medication in an inpatient setting often aids healing and makes the transition back to everyday life much easier for many. The PNPs will work with your therapist to prescribe medications and monitor you closely, adjusting where necessary.

Diamond House: OCD Residential Treatment California

Whatever your needs are as you work through this time, we aim to accommodate them. That’s why we offer three programs on our campus, each providing a different level of on-site attendance:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): The PHP lets patients get the day-to-day support they need while allowing them to return home in the evenings and on weekends. They’ll spend every weekday going through treatment. Once they’re done, they can return to their families and responsibilities.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Our IOP offers the most freedom and flexibility of our programs. Participants will attend personalized treatment sessions three to four times a week for a few hours at a time. Outside of those sessions, they’re free to continue their normal lives.

Why Consider Treatment for OCD and Intrusive Thoughts?

Contrary to popular belief, a mental illness like OCD won’t go away if you try to ignore it. It’s like a physical injury or sickness — the longer you ignore it, the more likely it will get worse, leading to severe symptoms such as:

  • Problems with school, work and personal relationships
  • Substance use and other risk-taking behaviors
  • Self-harm and suicidal thoughts or actions

When your OCD starts interfering with your daily life, it’s time to seek treatment from people who understand mental health. Whether you’re the one facing setbacks or someone you love is struggling, let Diamond House help you find the solutions you need.

Helping Your Loved One Find Treatment

When someone you care about is dealing with OCD, there are many ways to help them cope and know they’re not alone in what they’re going through. Some of the easiest ways to help are to:

  • Learn more about OCD and its treatment: Understanding more than the cliches and media representations of OCD will show your person you care about their personal experiences and are willing to listen. Even if they aren’t ready to get professional help right away, you may be able to introduce them to some beneficial coping skills.
  • Create a support network for your loved one: If there are other trustworthy and caring people in your social circle, encourage your loved one to connect with them to let them know what’s going on so they can offer support, too. These connections let your loved one know they have a whole community of support at their disposal.
  • Ask your loved one what they need from you: However much research you do, the best way to help your loved one is to ask them what they need from you. Even taking a trip to the store for them or doing some laundry can be a big help.
