SMART Recovery

If you or a loved one is struggling with an addiction, many options and programs exist that can help. Many people have tried the 12-step program with Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. But for some, this type of program doesn’t provide the path to recovery they seek. Or, you may feel you need additional support through the process.

If you’re looking for a new alternative to beating your addiction, SMART Recovery may offer the tools you seek.

SMART stands for self-management and recovery training. SMART Recovery consists of its 4-Point Program that focuses on self-empowerment, self-reliance and abstinence from your addiction. The points include:

  • Point 1: Building and maintaining motivation to abstain from use
  • Point 2: Coping with urges
  • Point 3: Managing thoughts, feelings and behaviors
  • Point 4: Balance momentary and enduring satisfaction for a more fulfilling life

Participants in the program help each other shift their focus to enjoying healthy, fulfilling and productive behaviors. SMART holds meetings both online and face-to-face and also has an international presence.

Smart meetings typically last 60 to 90 minutes and are free to attend, though donations are accepted. They are open to anyone — even if you have not yet stopped using substances. Fully trained volunteers facilitate the meetings and begin by reading the Group Welcome, which provides an overview of how the meeting will be run.

Next, attendees provide “check-ins” to discuss their challenges, successes and personal goals. New attendees are encouraged to share why you’ve decided to join the meeting, but you can also just sit and listen if you prefer.

The facilitator and group will address any issues brought up during the check-in portion of the meeting that should be further discussed. They also use and explain the SMART tools that are part of the program. These include exercises, worksheets and reflection tools that help participants develop more positive cognitive skills.

Cross-talk and group discussion is encouraged during SMART meetings. Everyone is accepted, no matter what stage of recovery you may be at. There is no religious or spiritual emphasis placed on meetings.

SMART Recovery is based heavily in scientific research with an emphasis on changing your self-defeating thoughts and emotions around your addiction, so you can work toward recovery and find long-term satisfaction to improve your quality of life.

Unlike other programs that promote the idea that you will always be an addict and can’t go it alone, SMART emphasizes the fact that you have the power to shape your own destiny. It also allows you to “graduate” from the program once you’ve reached a point of recovery.

SMART Recovery encourages you to explore the range of recovery options and choose the one that’s best for you. It’s all about finding your own path to recovery. If you find that 12-step programs benefit you, you can use SMART alongside these and other treatment methods.

You have virtually nothing to lose by attending a meeting, and you may find that SMART is helpful for your recovery. Even if you’re not ready to begin the rehabilitation process, SMART meetings provide information that will help you when you decide to take the steps to recovery.

SMART holds meetings across the U.S. and around the world. If you’re looking for local SMART Recovery programs near you, visit their website to find meetings in your area.
