What Is Mindfulness-Based Outpatient Drug Treatment?

When you hear the word “mindfulness,” you might imagine people doing yoga surrounded by crystals and searching for the path to enlightenment. The concept of mindfulness is much more than a new-age trend, though. It is a mindset that takes practice, focus and dedication to achieve, and it may just be the key to fighting your addiction.

How It Works

Mindfulness-based interventions and treatments are about learning to live in the moment. They teach you to see the path right in front of you and accept it while acknowledging and coping with your emotions.

When you use substances, your brain chemistry changes. Substances affect how you make decisions and process consequences. Mindfulness practices strive to rewire those impulses, allowing you to see your situation more clearly and calmly decide how to proceed. They're often incorporated into cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), where you take time to notice your surrounding environment to reduce feelings of stress.

Mindfulness can be especially useful when we work with clients dealing with a co-occurring disorder, like anxiety or depression. People with these conditions tend to focus on the future or past, respectively, more than their present. When the thoughts become overwhelming, they're often triggered to want to stop them through drugs or alcohol. Mindfulness practices like meditation teach them to get back to their present and calm their thoughts, preventing them from relapsing.

Our Outpatient Drug Treatment Services

Diamond House Detox employs mindfulness in every program we offer at our Sacramento treatment facility, but our most popular treatment programs are our outpatient services. Our outpatient programs are perfect for people who have a busy life and can maintain their sobriety for short times on their own. You can visit our center anywhere from a few times a week to every day for intensive treatment, then return home in the evenings to spend time with your family and take care of your responsibilities.

When you come into our treatment center, our doctors will perform an evaluation to determine if you'd be a good candidate for the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Once we decide on the best treatment for you, we'll start your first CBT session and begin teaching you mindfulness practices like meditation right away. You can discuss your progress in group and individual therapy sessions and perhaps even learn other coping skills through your fellow attendees.
