What Is Partial Hospitalization?

Partial hospitalization is an addiction treatment program that allows you to live at home but come to a treatment facility for the day to receive care. You’ll participate in addiction therapy, group sessions and other activities during the day and go home in the evening. The program provides people with the support and guidance they need to maintain their mental health while allowing them to work or go to school. Most partial hospital programs last for three to four weeks on average or as needed.

While you’ll attend sessions in a day treatment setting, you will experience the same level of care as you would if you were part of a full-time treatment program. During your partial hospitalization program, you will learn how to manage your mental health or addiction with various symptom-reduction techniques and coping mechanisms. You will have multiple certified medical professionals as part of your dedicated treatment team, each ensuring you receive the help you need to achieve your goals and recover.

The Differences Between PHP and Standard Outpatient Addiction Treatments

PHP and standard outpatient addiction treatments let clients address their substance use disorder in specialized settings, but you’ll notice key differences between them. PHP is more intensive than standard outpatient treatment and offers more services and support. Since PHP lasts over four hours daily and at least five days a week, many consider standard outpatient treatment less intensive.

PHP Structure

Partial hospitalization programs are structured into five phases:

Evaluation

This phase includes an initial assessment and the development of a treatment plan. Mental health professionals will identify appropriate interventions for your individual needs.

Psychological and Medical Treatment

During this stage, we will employ various therapeutic interventions and ensure all necessary medical care is available throughout the program. Depending on your needs, these two facets of treatment can work together or separately.

Transition

To ensure all clients leave our programs prepared for life after completion, we gradually lower the treatment intensity and help clients develop skills needed for long-term recovery from addiction.

Maintenance

Finally, after clients successfully complete all previous stages of this program and are discharged, we offer ongoing support.

Our outpatient program is comprehensive because we want the best for all our clients. When you come to Diamond House, we do everything we can to provide you with compassionate and dedicated support that makes getting treatment more manageable. Our team is constantly cheering for you throughout your progress, encouraging you to finish strong and celebrating when you complete the program. Even after you conclude the program, you’ll receive continued support as we check in with you to see how the treatment and everything that you learned during it has helped you return to your regular lifestyle.

Who Does a Partial Hospitalization Program Work Best For?

Our partial hospitalization program in Sacramento is best for people who:

  • Can maintain their sobriety for periods. Partial hospitalization provides the structure and support these individuals need to manage their addiction and stay on track long term.
  • Have stable housing. Partial hospitalization requires clients to live at home, so they must have a safe place to stay while receiving treatment.
  • Have completed inpatient treatment in the past. If you’ve already gone through the inpatient process and feel you need additional care, partial hospitalization is an excellent option.
  • Have support at home. Partial hospitalization programs can seem like a challenging transition, so having someone supportive and reliable nearby helps many clients while they adjust to their new routines.
  • Need intensive care without the monetary or time commitment. Inpatient treatment can be costly, especially without insurance or other resources available to offset the expenses. Partial hospitalization programs offer similar treatment options at a reduced price point and with less time commitment than traditional inpatient programs.
  • Want to continue work or school. Partial hospitalization is the best option for individuals who wish to continue work or school and still receive support and accountability in their recovery. Partial hospitalization allows you to maintain your life outside treatment while getting the help you need from professionals in a structured program.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate?

Partial hospitalization programs are a great way to get the needed help, but they’re not for everyone. If you’re considering attending one, keep these four points in mind:

  1. This program is not a fit for those with suicidal thoughts. If you struggle with thinking about harming yourself or anyone else, please seek help from your doctor or a mental health professional immediately.
  2. You need to be able to follow directions. This program is very structured and requires commitment and time to achieve success.
  3. You should have a stable residence. Clients should have somewhere safe to return to after their treatment session ends each day.
  4. You need reliable transportation. Clients will need to be able to get to and from our facility everyday.

Our PHP has strict attendance requirements to ensure every person gets the treatment they need. Due to the nature of the intensive outpatient program, you should be fully committed to attending every session to receive the full benefits of the outpatient treatment.

If you are not a candidate for our partial hospitalization program in Sacramento, browse our other treatment programs, such as the intensive outpatient program. We have a wide range of programs that can help you take your recovery to the next level.
